This map was produced using satellite data to track the location and spread of mining spanning a 30 year period from 1976 to 2005 across a
59 county study area. The image base layer is more recent and shows mines which were not active during our study. The data from this map have been used in six peer-reviewed studies on the environmental and public health impacts of Mountaintop Removal mining. To learn more, please visit our
